Ian Thomas, Food and Regulatory Lawyer

Dual-qualified regulatory lawyer practising in Ireland, England and Wales.
Ian specializes in food law and provides advice to clients in the UK, Ireland and beyond on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters including; safety and hygiene, food information, nutrition and health claims, food supplements, borderline products, traceability, product withdrawals and recalls, animal welfare, official controls, mutual recognition and enforcement.

Mr Thomas works with clients to respond positively and effectively to threatened and actual enforcement action and represents them in court in criminal matters and appeals against enforcement notices.

In addition to food law, Ian works in the areas of non-food consumers products, health and safety, trading standards and consumer protection.

He advises on a wide range of matters including; safety and hygiene, labelling and information, nutrition and health claims, withdrawals and recalls and regulation and enforcement.

Ian is an elected Fellow of the Society of Food Hygiene and Technology, a Contributing Lecturer to the PgC/PgD/MSc Food Regulatory Affairs course (University of Ulster/University College Dublin) and is a guest lecturer on the MSc Course in Applied Culinary Nutrition at the Technological University Dublin. He is a member of the Food Law Group and the Food Safety Professionals Association. He devised and presents a food law course for MBL Seminars and is a regular speaker at conferences.

He is the author of ‘A Practical Guide to the Law Relating to Food’ and ‘Covid-19 and the Law Relating to Food in the UK and Republic of Ireland’.
